Homes let by the month
Renting by the month on the Costa Ballena
A long-term rental here is a furnished house taken for a month or more: your own kitchen, pool and terrace, at one monthly rent in place of a nightly rate. People take them to spend a season on the coast, to work from here, or to try living in the area before deciding on anything more permanent.
WildRoots manages homes between Dominical and Ojochal, and also offers some long-term homes on behalf of their owners. The homes available by the month are listed on this page with their rent, and each one says whether we manage it. Our vacation homes can also be taken for longer stays. The quiet months are where that makes most sense, and the rate is easier to agree in a conversation than through a calendar, so ask.
In a home we manage, the same local team looks after you for as long as you are in it: the WhatsApp line is answered around the clock in English and Spanish, and the vendors we call are people we already work with. In a home we offer for its owner, we put you in touch, and the owner looks after the house and agrees the terms with you.
Where to rent long term
Four places a short drive apart, each a different kind of daily life.
Uvita
The middle of the coast and the practical base. The groceries, the weekly feria, the boats and the entrances to Marino Ballena National Park are all here. Homes divide between the flat land near the bay and the hills above it, where the views are better and the road matters more.
Dominical
The surf town at the north end, with a beach break that works most of the year. It draws surfers and people on longer stays who work from here. The Escaleras ridge above it holds many of the best ocean views on this coast, on roads that are steep and rough in the green season.
Ojochal
The quiet southern end of the coast, and the one people come to for the food: a small village with an international restaurant scene. It is also the starting point for the Térraba-Sierpe wetlands and the top of the Osa Peninsula.
Bahía Ballena
The bay in front of Uvita, with Marino Ballena National Park and the Whale's Tail sandbar at its centre. Homes here sit within a short drive of the park entrances, between the beach and the hills above the bay.
What the year is like
December to April is the dry season: clear skies, calm sea and the busiest weeks of the year. May to November is the green season, with afternoon rain, lush hills and lower rates. Humpback whales reach the bay twice a year, and the larger southern group comes through around September and October.
A stay of several months sees more than one of these. Roads in the hills change with the rain, so whether a house needs a 4x4 depends on the house and the month. We tell you plainly before you commit to a vehicle.
How renting by the month works
Choose your dates
Each home let by the month has its own calendar. Pick an arrival and a departure a month or more apart and send them to us from the home's page.
We confirm the terms
Nothing is paid on the site. We reply in English or Spanish to confirm the dates and the rent. For a home we manage, we arrange the agreement and payment with you directly; for a home we offer on an owner's behalf, we put you in touch with the owner.
A team nearby in the homes we manage
In a home we manage, the house is ready when you arrive, and the same team is a message away if something needs fixing in the first month or the sixth.
